American Top Team Media Day

On Tuesday October 5, 2010, media day at American Top Team Coconut Creek took place in preparation for Fight Time 2 on October 23, 2010. ATT Coconut Creek is the flagship gym for the amazing franchise that ATT has evolved into.

The day began with a demonstration by Jeff Monson and Howard Davis Jr teaching Peter, a reporter for the Sun Sentinel, some MMA basics.

Jeff Monson said “When you charge me, come at me like you’re a train and going right through.” Your not simply making contact with your opponent you are displaying precise action that doesn’t stop just because you hit a brick wall, aka Jeff.

It looks a lot easier then it is when you have pro’s showing you the ropes.  Circle and charge, push him to the mat and choke the opponent out.

When interviewing Jeff, we asked about his mindset going into a match with such a seasoned opponent as Travis “The Iron Man” Fulton, with over 200 fights under his belt. He answered with the confidence a fighter should exhibit. "You go in with your all and work on your weaknesses until you get there."

He is preparing by working on standing positions for this bout at Fight Time 2, and his upcoming fight in Israel.

What Lauderdale wishes the best of luck to all the fighters taking part in Fight Time 2. This is set to be a sensational event anticipated by MMA fans throughout South Florida with the backing of Fight Time and Elite promotions headed by Howard Davis Jr and Jeff Gibson.

Bellator

Bellator and Everlast brought yet another fantastic fight night to south Florida this past August 12, 2010 for the Bellator Mixed Martial Arts competition.

South African born Neil Grove savagely beat Eddie Sanchez, resulting in a TKO Round 1 (1:32). Grove is an Ultimate Challenge UK heavyweight champion and one-time UFC fighter with a 4 year career in fighting after transitioning from rugby.

The “Queen of Sambo,” Megumi Fujii, threw jabs like lighting, establishing her as a force to be reckoned with. She won by TKO against Carla Esparaza of Redondo Beach, California with an arm bar submission in Round 2 at 57 seconds. Megumi softened the Hard Asses in her post-fight interview with her huge smile and limited English -- winning over the crowd.

Cuban born Judo Olympian Hector “Shango” Lombard won by TKO against Herbert Goodman. Lombard established himself as the current Middleweight champion for the Bellator Fighting Championships by delivering a round of bell ringers in Round 1, ending the fight at 38 seconds.

A round and pound that everyone waited for was Jessica Aguilar! She is an absolute celebrity in the sport. Everyone anticipated her fight. Aguilar's fan base is growing at an exponential rate, building a solid female following in Mixed Martial Arts.

Her respect for the sport and her opponent is evident in every fight. No one seems to have the focus and tranquility that Jessica carries.

Aguilar had a special guest in attendance, the creator of popular Spanish Christmas song "Feliz Navidad" -- a South Florida favorite! José Feliciano was in attendance to celebrate the 40th anniversary of his hit song.

When Aguilar's opponent, Lyn Alvarez walked out, the crowd was torn as to who would dominate the cage. Lyn looked like a hardcore grappler. Even the judges thought it might be a toss up.

The fighters tapped gloves and the crowd sat silent. The echo of barking coaches replaced cheering, until Aguilar triumphed and Alvarez surrendered, crumbling beneath Aguilar’s fury -- tapping out of an arm triangle submission at 4 minutes and 1 second. A commending effort from Alvarez for holding out that extra second!

The main event of the night was moved to later on in the night. Luis Palomino of Miami, Florida was defeated by Yves Edwards of Austin TX. It was a win by judge's decision with a triple outcome of 30/27.

The last fight of the night was a snore. Franhad Sharipov of Orlando, Florida spent most of the time on his back.

It was evident that Eric Luke of Port St. Lucie, Florida would win by TKO. Even a seasoned judge said, “I love when it’s an easy fight to call!” It was yet another fantastic fight night at the Hard Rock Live in Hollywood, Florida.

Miami is now looking forward to the next large MMA event to come to South Florida: Fight Time 1 featuring Jeff “The Snowman” Monson on August 21st at Club Cinema in Pompano Beach, Florida.

New Generation II

There was blood on the floor La Covacha, in Doral, on Friday, June 25th 2010. Mixed Fighting Alliance’s New Generation II was another perfect display of a pounding at its essence. The octagon was setup in a most unusual spot - in the parking lot of a restaurant and nightclub in West Miami. Imagine a series of some of the toughest dudes you've ever seen, being merciless in the ring as club-goers come out to witness thechaos. A site that had to be seen to believe!

The New Generation organization hopes to bring fresh blood to the MMA world. The fight card that night was impressive with contenders like Alexis Vila (7-0) of the American Top Team flyweight division - an undefeated fighter. Cuban-bornVila has fought his way around the world boasting titles such as former world Freestyle champion. Needless to say he ended the night with a victory against Wisconsin's best, Omar Chovdhury (13-6)! The intensity and focus of this bout was magnificent. A few of the fights ended in the blink of an eye, such as the 17-second knockout by Yoislandy Izquierdo in the 6th bout.

The oddest display of the night was the huge street fight in the fighters' tent right after the show. The brawl started when a fighter criticized another coach and the boys went on the defense. The tents were destroyed with blood and chairs everywhere. Fighting equipment was strewn across the floor and dozens of confused on-lookers rushed to get out of the way. One arrest was madeJose "Fresh Prince" Caceres had this to say about the turmoil: "I have no idea I just, like, punched somebody in the face like 5 times. I heard FIGHT, and I was like YEAH I’m still fighting!" - a certain enthusiasm from this new blood fighter. You can’t change the spirit of a fighter, a warrior is always ready!

New Generation II was a successful event for new, emerging talents to display their skills in the octagon. As a plus, the after-party was beyond sexy, with hundreds of mamacitas grooving and shaking to the Latin Rhythms of La Covacha's nightclub. Make sure to keep an eye out on the upcoming fights featuring these brave, dedicated New Generation fighters.
